What Does Cloud Hosting Mean?

What is cloud hosting really? The word 'cloud' appears to be very modish in today's information technology, Internet and hosting parlance. Still, only a select few actually know what cloud hosting is. Maybe it is a sensible idea to inform yourself about cloud hosting services. To make a quite lengthy story concise, we will firstly let you in on what cloud hosting is not.

1. Cloud Hosting is Not Limited to a Remote File Storage Only.

1. Offering a remote data storage service, which involves one disk storage device for all users, does not turn any specific hosting corporation into a real cloud hosting vendor.

The cPanel web hosting companies call the ability to supply remote data storage services a cloud hosting service. Up until now there is nothing wrong with the cloud terminology, but... we are talking about web hosting services, not remote data storage solutions for personal or corporate needs. There's invariably one "but", isn't there? It's not enough to name a shared hosting solution, based on a one-single-server hosting platform, precisely like cPanel, a "cloud hosting" service. This is so because the remaining components of the entire web hosting platform must be functioning in exactly the same manner - this does not apply solely to the remote data storage. The other services entailed in the whole web hosting procedure also have to be remote, separated and "clouded". And that's extremely problematical. A very meager number of hosting service providers can actually achieve it.

2. It Encompasses Domains, Email Box Accounts, Databases, File Transfer Protocols, Web Hosting Control Panels, and so on.

Cloud hosting is not restricted to a remote data storage only. We are talking about a hosting service, serving numerous domain names, web portals, emails, etc., aren't we?

To call a web hosting service a "cloud hosting" one calls for a lot more than furnishing plainly remote file storage mounts (or probably servers). The email server(s) must be dedicated solely to the electronic mail associated services. Doing nothing else than these given tasks. There might be only one single or maybe a whole assortment of mail servers, depending on the total server load generated. To have a genuine cloud hosting solution, the remote database servers should be working as one, irrespective of their actual quantity. Doing nothing different. The same is valid for the customers' web hosting CPs, the File Transfer Protocol, and so on.

3. There are Cloud Domain Name Servers (DNSs) as well.

The DNSs (Domain Name Servers) of a real cloud hosting packages provider will support multiple data center facility locations on different continents.

Here's an illustration of a DNS of a genuine cloud hosting services provider:

dns1.jeannieindigital.net

dns2.jeannieindigital.net

If such a DNS is supplied by your hosting supplier, it's not a guarantee that there is a cloud hosting platform in use, but you can definitely be sure when you see a DNS like the one underneath:

dns658.hostgator.com

dns659.hostgator.com

that there isn't any cloud web hosting service. This sort of Domain Name Server only manifests that the web hosting platform in use is one-server based. Possibly it's cPanel. cPanel is a one-single-server web hosting platform and holds a 98+ percent market share. In cPanel's case, one single physical server tackles all hosting services (web, email, DNS, databases, FTP, hosting Control Panel(s), web site files, etc.).

Remote File Storage - The Distorted Characterization of Cloud Hosting.

So, a cloud hosting service is not restricted just to a remote file storage solution, as multiple web hosting corporations wish it was. Sadly for them, if that was the case, most of the file service providers would have been referred to as cloud web hosting ones a long time ago! They are not categorized as such, as they plainly distribute file hosting solutions, not cloud web hosting solutions. The file web hosting platform appears really very simple, when compared to the hosting platform. The remote data storage platform is not a cloud web hosting platform. It cannot be, because it's merely one tiny part of the whole cloud hosting platform. There's plenty more to be found in the cloud hosting platform: the web hosting Control Panel cloud, the database clouds (MySQL, PostgreSQL), the DNS cloud, the File Transfer Protocol cloud, the electronic mail cloud and... in the not too distant future, probably a bunch of brand new clouds we currently are not familiar with will show up out of nowhere.
